Lafayette Cemetery

Lafayette Cemetery | Acrylic | 12" x 16"

Matthew Cutter's Lafayette Cemetery finds a way to not only honor, but celebrate the solemnity of the cemetery with a visit on a sunny day after a soft rain. His composition so smartly incorporates the stillness of the crypts with the suggestion of the life that is still there, still visiting, still finding solace in the history of this place. Cutter’s highly regarded mastery in oil painting once again captures and records forever the myriad ways daylight and shadow mix with the actual atmosphere (humidity) making all places worthy of remembrance.  Note:  do you see the two pottery vases, one red and one white?  There is so much here to love and admire.  Make Lafayette Cemetery and New Orleans something you’ll remember.

American artist Matthew Cutter aims to capture the beauty and solitude of the landscape; adept with both oil and acrylic, he paints his surroundings with sensitivity and poetic expression. A simple color harmony or pattern in nature is often the source of inspiration.

Employing a variety of techniques and tools keeps Matthew’s work fresh and exciting. Largely self-taught, Matthew is attempting to redefine acrylic as a medium equal to oil by manipulating surface textures to look like oil paint. His effort has not gone unnoticed as his collectors often comment on how his acrylic paintings resemble oils.

In 2010, he won the President’s Award at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and in 2015 he was featured as an emerging artist in Southwest Art magazine. Matthew has work in several corporate collections and has built a loyal following among private collectors.
