Resurrecting the Divine

A Three Panel Triptych

Killing our Ideal (Tyranny), Restoring our Faith (The Desert), The City of God (The Promised Land) with custom made mortise & tenon quarter sawn white oak frame – the framed work measures 35" x 112".

Panel One: Killing our Ideal, Oil on Panel, 24” x 30”

Tyranny : Every ideal is a judge. Our highest ideals are reserved for those things that should be sanctified and held in the highest order. When we kill this ideal, it does not mean that we have no ideal, but that something else takes its place; that is when the political enters. An ideology becomes the new religion. We must aim for the highest good.

Panel Two: Restoring our Faith, Oil on Panel, 24” x 36”

The Desert: When we leave a situation that is tyrannical and/or detrimental in some capacity, we do not instantly go to a better place. Often, we end up in the proverbial desert. It is a great leap into the unknown. This painting hearkens back to the biblical story of the Exodus. “Restoring our Faith” is about reclaiming our traditions and recognizing their value.

Panel Three: The City of God, Oil on Panel, 24” x 30”

The Promised Land: One of Saint Augustine‘s most famous works was titled “The City of God”. I have chosen this name as the title for the third panel of my series. It Coincides perfectly with the idea of the promised land. It aims away from earthly things and abandons a lust for dominance. As Augustine put it, “ The City of God is rightly ordered love.”

Gallery Director

American artist Matthew Cutter aims to capture the beauty and solitude of the landscape; adept with both oil and acrylic, he paints his surroundings with sensitivity and poetic expression. A simple color harmony or pattern in nature is often the source of inspiration.

Employing a variety of techniques and tools keeps Matthew’s work fresh and exciting. Largely self-taught, Matthew is attempting to redefine acrylic as a medium equal to oil by manipulating surface textures to look like oil paint. His effort has not gone unnoticed as his collectors often comment on how his acrylic paintings resemble oils.

In 2010, he won the President’s Award at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and in 2015 he was featured as an emerging artist in Southwest Art magazine. Matthew has work in several corporate collections and has built a loyal following among private collectors.
