Pierre-Auguste Renoir created this print using a drawing transferred onto a lithographic stone, which he refined with lithographic ink. After printing the first state, he hand-colored an impression with pastel, serving as a guide for the printer, Auguste Clot, to produce the final color version. The result showcases Renoir’s signature loose strokes and vibrant, atmospheric colors. The number of colors Clot used varies, and he added a second stamped signature below the plate in later impressions. The subject, Julie Manet (daughter of Berthe Morisot), is shown pinning flowers on her cousin Paulette’s summer hat. Renoir revisited this theme in various mediums, including pastel, oil, and etchings. Interestingly, Renoir began printmaking later in life, at nearly 50, after establishing himself as a leading Impressionist. Between 1890 and 1908, he created around 60 prints, split between etchings and lithographs, many commissioned for books or albums.
